Infrastructure

Fiber Trays As you know, reliable, redundant infrastructure is a must for any significant data center. StrataSpace has properly designed and installed the necessary infrastructure with that in mind.

Power - Currently StrataSpace has 4 megawatts of power capacity. In addition, the company has approval to build a 40-MW onsite substation. If more power is desired the local utility is prepared to increase capacity. All power will be backed up with generators located within the underground facility.

Fiber - Multiple fiber providers serve the Louisville market. AT&T and Insight Communications have fiber installed at Strataspace. Other fiber providers, including Level 3 Communications, Time Warner Cable and Kentucky Data Link (KDL), are also available.

Grounding - StrataSpace has an extensive grounding system, using five-hundred (500) grounding rods. The rods are 5/8" x 8'0" copper clad rods. The rods are inserted into 3" diameter holes with earth enhancement material (Erico Part #GEM 25A) packed around the rod. The GEM material is 20 times lower in resistance than bentonite clay. The rods are connected with 4/0 copper stranded wire that is exothermally welded to the tops of all 500 rods, forming a grounding grid throughout the entire facility. The system creates a low impedance grounding grid to protect data equipment. The grounding grid is in full agreement with IEEE Std. 1100 - 1990 and will provide 2 ohms of resistance or less.

Backup Power - Diesel generators back up the entire power network. The generators are in an underground building, protected from the elements, but also have remote-mounted radiators near an outside opening for ventilation purposes. The generator building is also under constant surveillance by camera and has alarm points at its entryways.

The underground generator and fuel storage area is designed to support 24 megawatts of generator capacity and 125,000 gallons of fuel storage. The first two 2.25-MW Caterpillar generators are already in place.

Maintenance contracts are in place with a local distributor and Caterpillar factory- trained mechanics.

Fuel Supply (Backup Power) - The generator farm is supplied with fuel from our underground diesel fuel supply and is housed in a separate underground building. Two suppliers and two trucking companies maintain the fuel system. This gives us flexible access to fuel delivery. Fuel is delivered from the outside so that no fuel trucks come into the underground facility. The StrataSpace fuel farm is located underground and will consist of five 25,000-gallon steel tanks.
