Data Center Building Boom to Continue3/31/2009

By Rich Miller

Soaring energy use in corporate data centers is continuing to force companies to build more facilities, according to Ken Brill, Executive Director of the Uptime Institute. At the recent Green:Net 09 conference, I spoke with Ken about recent industry trends. “There’s a misperception that the data center building boom that’s going on is a one-time event,” Brill says. “I don’t believe that’s the case.” The problem is that the short life span of data centers is an expensive problem that could be fixed with the right approach. “The problem isn’t technology,” Ken says. “The problem is leadership and management.” He discusses Uptime’s call for companies to appoint in-house “energy czars” to coordinate energy efficiency initiatives across the organization.
